Arithmetic - Monday 11th October

Group 1 - 

Group 2 - Today you will be doubling and halving multiples of 100.

On a piece of paper write and answer the following questions:

  • Double 100 = 
  • Double 200 = 
  • Double 300 =
  • Double 400 = 
  • Double 500 = 
  • Double 600 = 
  • Double 700 = 
  • Double 800 = 
  • Double 900 = 
  • Double 1000 = 

Repeat, this time halving multiples of 100. Remember that when the 100s digit is odd, the calculation is a little trickier and there will be a 50 in the answer. 

  • Half 100 =

Group 3 - Today you will be doubling numbers to 100.

Work with somebody at home. One of you shuffles a set of 10s cards and the places them in a pile face down while the other shuffles a set of 1s cards and places them in a pile face down. Say 'go' and you both turn over your top card to create a 2-digit number. Work together to double this 2-digit number. How many can you double in a minute? Shuffle the cards and have another go. Did you double more the second time?

Year 6 - Today you will be dividing numbers with up to 4 digits by a 2-digit whole number.

Arithmetic - Tuesday 12th October

Group 1 - 

Group 2 - Today you will be working on the 3 times table.

Write down the 3 times table, E.g. 1 x 3 = 3, 2 x 3 = 6, 3 x 3 = 9, and so on. 

Group 3 - Today you will be doubling and halving numbers to 100.

You will need somebody at home to play this game with. Start by drawing a blank 0-200 number line on a piece of paper. The first player takes a 0-9 dice and rolls it twice to generate a 2-digit number. You can choose to either double or halve it. Mark where you number goes on the number line. Your partner will do the same. Keep doing this - the first to get 5 numbers without your partner's numbers in between wins.

Year 6 - Today you will be dividing numbers with up to 4 digits by a 2-digit whole number.

Year 6 Maths Lesson 10

Arithmetic - Wednesday 13th October

Group 1 - 

Group 2 - Today you will be working on the 6 times table. 

Your task is to make up a poem to help you to remember the 6 times table. For example:

1 x 6 is 6, pick up sticks,

2 x 6 is 12, sit on the shelf,

3 x 6 is eighteen, we love baked beans

Practise saying the rhyme out loud and then ask somebody at home to video you performing it and then to email it to me. 

Group 3 - Today you will be working on bar charts.

Here is a bar chart that shows types of pizzas sold. Talk to somebody at home about what it shows including how many of each pizza were sold. How can you work out how many pizzas were sold altogether? Which type of pizza was twice as popular as another? Now have a go at drawing your own graph where tice as many cheese and tomato pizzas where sold as tuna and sweetcorn and twice as many pepperoni pizzas were sold as ham and pineapple. There should still be a total of 20 pizzas.

Religious Education - Wednesday 13th October

Today you will be considering the difficulties for people of different religious beliefs living in non-religious communities. 

What is a non-religious community? Which non-religious communities are you a part of? Read the slides to find out more. 

Year 5 - Read the account of a boy's experience of fasting during Ramadan on Worksheet 4A, then answer the questions.

Year 6 - Read the facts on the Facts about Ramadan Card, then respond to the questions on Worksheet 4B, giving your opinions. 

Handwriting - Thursday 14th October

Today you will practise writing words with the end-low drop-on join using words with the letter strings 'ace', 'qua' and 'af'. 

Synonyms - In this activity, you will practise the end-low drop-on join with words containing 'q' and the letter string 'qua'. You are given five words and your task is to choose a word with a similar meaning from a word bank. You will then write each pair of words next to each other. If you are unsure of the meanings, you can use an online dictionary to check your answers. You will then use each word in a sentence of your own. The letters 'q' and 'a' are both drop-on letters.

You have had a go at three different arithmetic activities this week. Today I would like you to choose the one that challenged you the most and have another go at it. If you want to, you can also have a look at the activities that other groups have done and choose one of those instead. 

Maths - Thursday 14th October

Year 5 - 

Year 6 - Today you will be dividing 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers giving rise to remainders, using number bonds and long and short division as key strategies to solving division problems. 

Year 6 Maths Lesson 12

Science - Thursday 14th October

Today you will be observing and comparing the life cycles of animals in our local environment with other animals around the world. 

Can you think of some words to describe the environment near or around our school where plants and animals live? Write down some of the words that you can think of. Is the environment near our school like the pictures on the slides

Year 5 - On the 'Comparing Life Cycles' sheet, read the descriptions of the two life cycles of two similar animals from different environments. Highlight or underline the similarities in one colour, and differences in another. In the space provided, write a description of the differences between the life cycles of the two animals, giving reasons for those differences such as environmental factors.

Year 6 - Choose one of the environments shown on the slides to research using books, atlases, and the internet. Based on this research, produce a display on paper, featuring descriptions of the conditions of the environment, some of the animals that live in it, their life cycles, and the ways in which these differ from our local environment. You may include pictures, lists, facts, diagrams, graphs, and tables of data in your display. The Challenge Card includes some questions to help you.
